Cubism brought different views of subjects together in the same picture, resulting in paintings that appear fragmented and abstracted. Watson & Gabb wanted to reinterpret the broken/reassembled cubist aesthetic to create a sculptural panel with a compellingly maverick spirit. We have known these shapes for a long time. They are around us in nature, in rocks and mountains, and in our design culture with artists such as Braque and Picasso.
Appreciating a timeless classic and structural purity, Cubist is formed around a metal structure set onto a pigmented resin. Using a stencil, the liquid pigment is poured into each area, creating interesting contrasts in relief and light. The panel is then finished to a high polish by hand for several hours.
Cubist really exposed our craft skills to their full advantage and the beauty of the piece is achieved in the detail.
